Task

Isolate the #1 Chiller while bringing a temporary chiller online to eliminate service disruption to a major hospital.

Conditions

The #1 Chiller at a Major Hospital in Houston was due for replacement when the building engineers attempted a test shut down it was discovered that the isolation valves failed to close properly. This would not allow a clean switchover to the temporary unit without a major service interruption.

Solution

A joint meeting between MSC and Building Engineers yielded the following results. MSC quickly mobilized and performed (2) 10” taps upstream of the failed supply and return isolation valves. This allowed the Hospital to get the temporary chiller into service quickly without interrupting service while the Line Stop fittings were being transported from the manufacturer to the job site. Once the Line Stop fittings were received and welded onto the chill water piping MSC then proceeded to perform the line stops on the supply and return lines simultaneously. Once isolation was confirmed the contractor was able to change out the failed valves without any disruption to the chilled water system.
