Line Stopping Fitting Installation
Water Line Stop Services / Pipeline Stopping Services
Line stopping, or pipeline stopping services, is a method for creating a temporary "point shut-down" on an existing main water line without interrupting service. Unlike using existing valve infrastructure, which can take a larger section out of service, line stopping focuses on minimal disruption.
Depending on the specific needs and existing infrastructure of each installation, line stops can be performed individually, in conjunction with existing valves, or multiple stops can be deployed simultaneously. It is common to use a "dual line stop" to isolate both sides of a specific main area effectively.

Line Stopping Services
For municipal pipeline stopping services, Mickie Service Company is the leading provider in the Gulf Coast region. Our line stopping services, also known as pipeline stopping, are designed to provide a temporary shut-off for existing water mains, significantly reducing water loss, service interruptions, and infrastructure damage from de-pressurization.
Line stops can be executed as "single" for unidirectional flow or "double" for bi-directional flow within grid systems. The process is performed while the main is under pressure, using a size-on-size tap to insert a rubber plug into the line with a hydraulic ram, supported by the line stop sleeve. Once the required service is complete, the stop is removed, and a blind flange is installed. This method of line stopping is optimal for temporary shut-offs lasting less than three days. To accommodate diverse needs and ensure efficiency, we maintain an inventory of line stop fittings in all standard sizes from 4" to 60", thereby minimizing delays due to pipe uncertainty.
At Mickie Service Company, we offer a range of line-stopping solutions tailored to meet specific job requirements. Our Standard Plug stopping solution is ideal for routine applications, providing effective and secure temporary shut-offs. For high-pressure systems, our High-Pressure Bullet option ensures reliable isolation under increased pressure conditions. The Folding Head solution is designed for specific line configurations, offering flexibility and adaptability across various pipeline systems. Our Line Freezing method is precise and isolates pipelines without draining, forming a solid ice plug to create efficient blockage in sensitive situations. Lastly, Inflatable Plug Stopping is versatile and easily deployable, controlling flow with minimal setup time.
Often referred to as line plugging or line stopping, these services are finely tuned to ensure minimal disruption and maximum efficiency for each unique project, affirming Mickie Service Company's commitment to excellence in pipeline management and care.
Benefits and Capabilities of Line Stopping
Advantages of Line Stopping

Pipeline Plugging Services
For municipal pipeline stopping services, Mickie Service Company is the leading provider in the Gulf Coast region. Our line-stopping services (also called line stop) provide a temporary shut-off of an existing water main.
Line stops can be “single” when flow is in a single direction or “double” for a grid, bi-directional flow situation. The line stops enable “point shut-down” of a main with dramatically reduced water loss, service interruption, and damage to infrastructure resulting from water main de-pressurization.
A line stop is performed while the existing main is under pressure. A size-on-size tap is made on the top of the main, and a rubber plug or stopper is inserted into the line. The plug is then pumped into the main using a hydraulic ram (the main is supported by the line stop sleeve), which shuts off the water flow. After performing the necessary service, the stop is removed, and a blind flange is installed on the sleeve.
Line stopping is the preferred approach when the shut-off required is temporary (less than 3 days). We stock line stock fittings 4"-60" in all standard sizes, minimizing customer delay resulting from underground pipe uncertainty.
How Does the Line Stopping Process Work?
Water Line Stopping Procedure and Process
If you are in need of a permanent valve solution, we offer municipal insertion valve service, as well. Mickie Service Company’s line stopping significantly reduces overtime costs and decreases repair and maintenance time.
1. Install Water Line Stop Fitting
The process begins by preparing the affected section of the water main with the installation of a specialized line stop fitting. This fitting is crucial as it allows future operations without affecting the overall system. It serves as the primary anchor point for all subsequent steps, ensuring that the isolation of the water flow can be achieved precisely where needed without disrupting service to the entire network.
2. Make Tap on Water Main
Once the fitting is securely in place, a precise tap is made on the water main. This involves creating an opening that provides access to the water main's interior, enabling the introduction of equipment necessary for stopping water flow. Careful execution of this step is vital to maintain the integrity of the main while preparing it for the insertion of the stopping plug.
3. Insert Line Stopping Plug in Housing
Following the tap, a line-stopping plug is positioned within the prepared housing. This plug acts as a temporary stop, isolating and controlling water flow through the segment of the pipe designated for maintenance or repair. Ensuring a tight and secure fit, the plug maintains the main's overall pressure conditions, allowing work to proceed safely.
4. Mount and Activate Line Stopping Equipment
After the plug is inserted, the line-stopping equipment is mounted and activated. This specialized equipment stabilizes the plug and manages water pressure within the isolated section. Its activation guarantees an effective seal, crucial for conducting maintenance without causing service interruptions or pressure-related issues in other parts of the main.
5. Perform Required Service and Installation
With the line stopping measures securely in place, technicians can safely perform necessary services or installations. This period can involve various tasks, such as repairing leaks, installing new components, or conducting routine maintenance, all performed without affecting the overall water supply,- thanks to the temporary stoppage.
6. Remove Equipment and Install Blind Flange
After completing the service tasks, the stopping equipment and plug are carefully removed. This allows for the installation of a blind flange over the original tap point. The flange ensures a permanent seal over what was once an access point, restoring the integrity of the water main and allowing normal operations to resume efficiently.
