What is Standard Plug Line Stopping?
Standard Plug Line Stopping is the most common type of line stopping. A rubber "bullet" is inserted through a hot tap made on the pipe. The rubber bullet is compressed into the pipe (which is supported by a sleeve) - and conforms to the interior of the pipe, providing a tight seal to stop the water flow.
A line stop is performed while the existing main is under pressure and enables “point shut-down” of a main when a permanent valveis unnecessary and the shut-off required is temporary (less than 3 days).
When to Use a Standard Plug Line Stop
Standard Plug line stopping can be performed on the primary water main types used for water distribution:
- Cast Iron
- Ductile Iron
- Asbestos Cement (AC, or transite)
